On August 6, 1945, the United States use a massive, atomic weapon against Hiroshima, Japan. This atomic bomb, the equivalent of 213000 tons of TNT, flattens the city, killing tens of thousands of civilians.

Three days after the bomb on Hiroshima a second atom bomb is dropped on Nagasaki. Approximately 40 percent of the city is destroyed. On 14 August, the Japanese agree to surrender unconditionally.
